About MQA

MQA is one of the most well-organized state quilting associations in the country. We have 3 gatherings a year, plus an educational seminar with a nationally-known teacher. Fall and Spring gatherings include demos and programs you can take back to your guild, and in June we have day-long workshops in Pearl where our own teachers lead classes to improve our skill repertoire.

Corinth Quilter Wins Best of Show at Mountain Quiltfest!

Norma Grissom, a member of the Needle Chasers Quilt Guild that meets in Iuka, won the prestigious Best of Show award at the recent “A Mountain Quiltfest” quilt show in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Grissom’s quilt won over 375 other quilts in judged competition at the March 14-18th show. The quilt also earned the most votes for favorite by visitors to the show, giving it the distinction of Viewers’ Choice, too. Norma won $4,000 and a Brother NX450Q sewing machine for the judged prize, and $250 more for the Viewers’ Choice award.
The quilt, “Hearts and Flowers,” is hand-appliquéd, and hand-quilted in the Baltimore album style, and took Norma about 2 years to complete. It was made for her daughter Peggy Winters, of Rienzi, but she won’t actually get it until it makes an appearance in other regional and national shows, said Grissom. Norma was inspired by the book Red and Green by Jeana Kimball, and added additional elements from other patterns to make the design her own.

Pinapple Surprise
20" x 20"
by Judy Spiers

Congratulations from all of us at MQA to Judy Spiers!
Her miniature quilt, Pineapple Surprise won Best in Show Miniature quilt at the American Quilt Society Show 2006 in Paducah!

It was also recently photographed by Quilters Newsletter Magazine, hopefully, for an upcoming article about miniature quilts.  It measures 20”x20” and has 88 blocks, with 8 of the blocks being half blocks and 80 whole blocks. All of the blocks are totally pieced, including the black blocks and the border. Each of the whole blocks have 77 pieces with about half of the pieces measuring 1/16th inch wide and the rest measuring about 1/8th inch wide. The quilt is made using only one block, which is a Pineapple block and only the color placement, the size and the shape of each block have been changed to create the design. The quilt has a total of 6,580 pieces.

Random Access
by Jackie Watkins

Congratulations to Jackie Watkins from all us at MQA!
Her quilt Random Access was selected for exhibit at the American Quilt Society Show 2006 in Paducah!

Random Access is a computer term, as Kathryn is getting her masters in computer security at Johns Hopkins.  Random Access also refers to the way I would go to my material stash and access a piece of material randomly that sort of looked like the picture I was using as a pattern.
