Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff Passed Away March 27, 2019

Cristen and I both thought the membership would like to know this news.

Hello, Cristen,

You and others in the Mississippi Quilt Association may well already be aware of this, but if not, it is with much sadness that I write that noted quilt expert and friend of so many quilters, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on March 27, 2019, after a prolonged illness.  Here is a link to her obituary:

Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff, appropriately known as Sunshine, worked closely with MQA, and she was the author of Mississippi Quilts (2001), co-author with Carol Vickers of Threading the Generations:  A Mississippi Family's Quilt Legacy (2005), and Martha Skelton:  Master Quilter of Mississippi (2008) as well as many other publications.  She was so hoping to be well enough to come to the Two Mississippi Museums in Jackson to see Stories Unfolded: An Exhibit of Mississippi Quilts (Dec 9, 2017 - Oct 14, 2018) that I curated for the MS Department of Archives and History, but sadly she was unable to do so.

I posted a tribute to Sunshine on the legacy page of her obituary and I think it would be most appropriate to include her obituary and a tribute from the Mississippi quilt community in the next issue of The Common Thread.  This could also be emailed out to the MQA membership and posted on web site, if you thought appropriate.

Thank you,

Mary Lohrenz
